Just over four years ago, Dedicated Paperboard was formed by Kerry Remley and Christopher Jordan. As a team, we have worked together for over 20 years selling and servicing customers in the Containerboard market. Kerry Remley started in 1990 as part of Kemiart (U.S.) helping to build Kemiart Coated Linerboard into a brand name in the industry. Christopher Jordan joined the Kemiart U.S. team in 2004 just as they were about to introduce Powerflute Medium to the market.
Fast-forward to 2020, after handing off close to 200,000 tons of sales annually for Metsä Board to take control of, we became the U.S. agent for Mondi Containerboard sales. It was a perfect opportunity to continue our partnership to sell products that were unique to the U.S. Market. The Mondi Group is a global leader in the packaging and paper industry that focuses on sustainable solutions for Containerboard customers.
Mondi’s products have specifications that provide a distinct advantage over domestic offerings. We are lucky to be able to provide something to customers that they cannot get anywhere else in the U.S. I always say, this industry is weird, you have smaller companies buying containerboard from bigger companies, then going out into the market and competing against those bigger companies for business. We offer something to allow those smaller companies to go out and actually compete against the big fish in the market.
In 2023, Mondi started their €125M Upgrade of the Powerflute Mill in Kuopio, Finland. The end result was that the strongest Medium being sold in the United States became 15% stronger. Customers are able to do things with Powerflute that are unmatched by domestic mediums being used in North America.
Mondi also made changes to their Baywhite Uncoated White top in 2023; the result of those changes were an uptick of 8% in Strength numbers. When you factor in the SCT, brightness, and Mullen values of Provantage Baywhite, there are few if any Uncoated White tops that can compete. The high brightness values of Baywhite make it ideal for digital printing.
One of the biggest concerns from customers when dealing with overseas mills is the supply availability. They are worried that it will take two months to get paper. Dedicated Paperboard has a combined 50 years of experience in managing the supply chain of product coming over from Europe. We work closely with the customers to make sure we have what they need and when they need it in one of our three Warehouses on the East Coast.
