No Blind Spots in Safety – How Lopos Keeps Packaging Plants Accident-Free

An interview with Lorenz Hertoghs, CEO of Lopos

Q: Lorenz, why is safety such a challenge in the packaging industry?

A: Walk into any corrugated or folding-carton plant, and you’ll see massive paper rolls moving at forklift speed, narrow aisles, rolling doors that open and close all day, and operators who rely on their senses in noisy, dynamic environments. One blind spot or moment of distraction is enough to cause a collision or a serious injury. At Lopos, we’ve seen first-hand how even the most experienced teams can be exposed to danger simply because traditional warning systems can’t see or react fast enough. That’s where we come in.

Q: How does Lopos make that possible?

A: We combine different technologies: AI-powered vision systems and/or non-line-of-sight technology built into potential wearables and our vehicle beacons. The technology actively provides assistance to pedestrians, forklifts, doors, and other equipment in real time. Forming a 360-degree safety assistance shield, drivers and pedestrians are warned and assets are protected. It’s simple, scalable, and designed for the roughest industrial floors, even surrounded by stacks of paper.

Q: What does a typical project look like?

A: Everything starts with a safety scan by one of our safety experts. We visit your facility, map traffic flows, and analyze where risks occur—forklift crossings, roll storage, doorways, and blind spots. Next, we provide a clear overview of which safety challenges today’s technology can solve and propose the best-fit solution for your site, balancing your operational needs. Once approved, our system can be installed in about a month. It’s completely plug-and-play, requiring no network integration.

Q: What kinds of incidents can you actually prevent?

A: We help prevent forklift-pedestrian collisions, vehicle-vehicle crashes, and door impacts—issues that cost packaging companies thousands every year in repairs and lost production. We also capture near-miss data, so managers can see where risk builds up and act proactively rather than reactively. Additionally, our dashboard also holds forklift efficiency data. Q: You recently joined AICC—what are your goals here? A: We already work with several tier 1 players in the corrugated industry in Europe and North America like Smurfit Westrock, so joining AICC is a natural next step. I’m looking forward to bringing our packaging-sector expertise to this community and helping members adopt smarter, data-driven, and active safety. In the end, safety isn’t a cost—it’s a competitive advantage. Lorenz Hertoghs is the CEO of Lopos Technologies. With a background in engineering and business management, he recently relocated to North America to locally accelerate Lopos’ growth and strengthen partnerships across the packaging and manufacturing sectors.
