“With the formation of the European branch, we are bringing the Vanguard printer portfolio, which has been extremely successful in the U.S., to the European markets and are opening up new customer segments,” said Christoph Gamper, CEO and co-owner of Durst Group. “Despite the difficult pandemic period, this is a clear signal to the market for large-format printing systems. With this step, we offer our customers new opportunities for production excellence and, in combination with innovative workflow and ERP solutions, a complete production chain from pixel to output.”

Vanguard Europe GmbH’s Brixen location building sits adjacent to Durst’s headquarters and includes over 5,000 square meters of factory space.

In addition to the Vanguard news, Durst presented its range of end-to-end solutions for digital printing applications at FESPA 2021.

“After such a long time, we are pleased to present our solutions to an international audience and to communicate the benefits of our ‘From Pixel to Output’ approach to the large-format printing market,” said Gamper.

In the final piece of Durst news, both Durst and Vanguard were honored with four 2021 Pinnacle Product Awards by PRINTING United Alliance.

The following products won awards:

  • Durst P5 TEX iSUB was awarded in the RTR Dye Sublimation on Textile category
  • Durst P5 TEX iSUB was awarded in the RTR Direct Disperse Ink on Textile category
  • Vanguard VK300D-HS was awarded in the UV Hybrid/Flatbed High Volume Production Class category
  • Lift Software ERP was awarded in the Workflow/MIS/CRM category.

“We are grateful for the recognition of multiple awards across our wide range of product offerings and will continue to focus on high productive solutions for the industry,” said Tim Saur, managing director and CEO of Durst North America.

A Koenig & Bauer Rapida 105 six-color plus coater LED-UV press was recently installed at Rand Graphics in Wichita, Kansas.

According to Rand Graphics President Randy Vautravers, the press has been “an extremely positive asset … “It separates us from our competition and gives us the ability to offer the largest UV capability in the country alongside our existing Koenig & Bauer Rapida 205 81-inch press. Since we print so many challenging substrates, this new Rapida provides us with a low-temperature exposure on our heat-sensitive substrates.”

Philipp Lithographing has also installed a Koenig & Bauer Rapida press, the 64-inch Rapida 164, and it’s not the first Koenig & Bauer investment Philipp has made.

“This will be our fourth Koenig & Bauer large-format press in the past 19 years,” said Peter Buening, Philipp’s CEO. “It will give us even more flexibility and allow us to run companion forms across all press platforms with perfect color consistency. Our previous Koenig & Bauer press installation was a 57-inch Rapida. We saw the speed and efficiency we gained with that press and now, with the new 64-inch press, we will be even more productive.”

Another company, Albany Packaging, has seen a boost in production from Koenig & Bauer’s products.

At Albany, investment in large-format equipment has increased overall plant productivity by 26% this year.

GenCorr Packaging has been acquired by The Royal Group (TRG), effective November 1.

“GenCorr’s business aligns perfectly with ours,” said Bob McIlvaine, president and CEO of TRG. “This acquisition expands our customer base and strengthens our manufacturing capabilities for our strategically important point-of-purchase business segment.”

GenCorr partners Vince Baratta and Tom Beemsterboer will continue in their current roles under the new ownership.

HP Inc.’s PageWide C500 feeder received the PRINTING United Alliance’s 2021 Pinnacle InterTech Award for technology innovation. It also won second place at the SuperCorrExpo Innovator of the Year competition earlier in the year.

The new HP PageWide C500 feeder is designed to improve converters operating profit and reduce waste. According to a company news release, it supports a wider range of sheets, including thin and microflutes, while maintaining a smooth feeding process and fast job changeovers.

Baldwin Technology Co., a sponsor of the Digital Packaging Summit in early November, touted new technology at the event.

Baldwin’s innovations, according to a company news release, include:

  • AMS Spectral UV X Series™ line of LED-UV curing solution
  • Guardian PQV 100% Print Inspection technology
  • MP IoT, which quickly connects the data from machines, accessories, MIS software and workflow to obtain a wholistic view of production and OEE, regardless of make, model or vintage of the assets

“Data and automation from connected machines and devices will drive the next great advantage in the graphics industry. … [W]e are excited to showcase what augmented Industry 4.0 intelligence can do to drive new levels of overall equipment efficiency and quality in labels, flexible and carton packaging, and corrugated printing,” said Baldwin Chief Marketing and IoT Officer Steve Metcalf.
