Why Digital?

With the proliferation of SKUs and shorter run lengths, digital offers “game-changing” benefits for converters. Digital provides quicker changeover, less make-ready, faster throughput. Increased productivity, efficiency, and capacity. Decreased cost, inventory, waste, and material. Increased print jobs per day and profit per job.

Digital creates new opportunities, and the ability to go after new business and enter new markets.

Digital Myth Busters:

Finn MacDonald dispels these myths of digital printing:

Myth #1: Digital is more complex than flexographic

“I would argue that digital by definition is easier and more consistent than direct print flexo. With digital, it’s ripping a file, sending it to the press, and hitting a button that’s green and says ‘go.’ In the space of 2 feet, you’re seeing a blank and you’re seeing vivid life … vivid color.”

Myth #2: The consumable cost of digital printing is a major factor

“Nobody outside of this building asks how much it costs to produce a digital blank with digital ink, rather
than a traditional sheet with flexo-based ink. Instead, we’re addressing the questions of ‘how does digital help you?,’ ‘how can digital help you grow?,’ ‘what are the values of digital?’ That’s what we’re addressing.”

Myth #3: Digital requires specialized space and a large footprint

“With a Domino press, you don’t need a clean room, you don’t need a lot of special air filtration, you don’t need a lot of special concrete build up floor placement, and what you really don’t need is a lot of space. You’ve got arguably the most compact press on the market (10′ H x 75′ L x 16′ D) / (3m H x 23m L x 5m D), so it’s going to get a whole lot done in a very small footprint. So as far as single-pass aqueous based, there aren’t any other players who have a machine like this press.”

Myth #4: Finding a digital press operator is difficult

“The workforce of today likes a couple things. They love a screen. They love to push a couple buttons. But they really don’t want to put a lot of time into getting their hands dirty, moving stuff around, getting stuff to the nth degree aligned. They like to push a button, see progress, and take pride in what they produced. That’s what we have on our Domino press. We have two operators who have zero longtime experience in corrugated. What they do have, is hustle. They don’t like the frustration of managing work, but they like to show up and get a lot done. So, the talent needed to get massive impact might be more available to you than you imagine.”
